It could have been worse.

Yes, I am still reading Devil in the White City, so many interruptions lately, it isn't even funny anymore. So this is how it happened. Joey is going to be 2 this December and I am feeling more confident about leaving contained in just the kitchen and family room in the afternoon after I have come home for lunch. He is however in a self contained crate in the morning. I guess he isn't totally ready to be left alone, he obviously is still getting in trouble.

I had left my book on the couch for the past couple nights and he had never even looked interested in it. But last Tuesday after being left alone for just one hour, this is what he did!

I am sure it could have been worse, he only ate the cover :( Dang, and he always looks so innocent too.

1) We never leave our dogs out of the crate if we are not home. They are pretty good about not chewing up things while we are home (except for a couple of Dylan's toys), but I don't trust them while we are gone.

Hope Joey enjoyed the book, I think paper is good for the digestive track. Sorry about the book.

2) Our girls have been left alone in the house, uncrated, since they were two years old (they're now six), and they've only had a couple of incidents e.g., chewing a piece of Galvin's wooden train set [twice] and trying to consume a pot holder. Now when we leave the house, we make sure all toys are put away and all doors are closed on the hallway, thus giving them only the primary living space (kitchen/dining/living) to "protect." I wonder if the destruction thing is a small-dog characteristic [because I've heard of this more often from those owners] or boredom or separation issues?

Sorry about your book...if it had been deemed unreadable, I would have dug mine out to loan you.

3) But such an innocent face-are you sure it wasn't the neighbors kids?

4) or maybe the ghost my girls swear we have in the house? Ric is missing his phone charger and we have absolutely NO clue where it would have gone to.

5) Glad it wasn't a library book. :)

I think small dogs are worse about that than larger ones but Labs can be very destructive. I'm convinced part of that is the strong retriever instinct. I saw one walking this AM with the owner carrying "something". Looked like a small clutch-bag. When I looked at the owner she said "she is working". You could tell the dog was happy doing it--she looked like she was having a great time--head and tail up, wagging the tail. They can be very destructive as puppies but grow out of most of it. Still, they tend to like to chew and mouth things.

Sounds like Joey is forgiven--if not appreciated for his faults.
