Apple Picking... A Disaster

We decided to head out to an apple farm yesterday with a friend of Roger's from work, Matthew, his wife, Lauren, and their son who about a year and a half, Jacob.

Our trip with Tripp turned out to not be the most fun in the whole world. We rushed out the door a few minutes late, got lost, and then got stuck in traffic. So, we were about an hour late meeting Matthew, Lauren, and Jacob. Tripp managed to sleep in the car during the ride there and woke up when we arrived. Because we were already late, Roger and I made the decision to quickly change him in the back of the car so that he wouldn't need to be changed in the orchards. He was still sleepy and got really cranky. Then, the day was cool and he needed a jacket. I tried putting the jacket on him (this was the first time he has worn anything like this), he was having none of it. Had I been paying attention to the time, I would have realized that he was getting ready to have a food crisis... I wasn't paying attention because we were so late. Roger and I both thought that taking the stroller was a bad idea because he can't stand being in his carseat while he is awake and we didn't bring his "big boy" stroller, only the snap and go.

We walk into the orchards and find The Rubins in the petting zoo. It smelled really bad. Keep in mind that Matthew has only met Tripp when he was two weeks old and fast asleep and Lauren and Jacob have never met him. As soon as we walk up, Tripp starts screaming and arching his back away from Roger. After a few minutes, I'm like, "He's hungry." So, we get the bottle out and Roger gives it to him. Tripp promptly spits up on his new and very cute jacket and Roger. Nice. Even after his meal, still very fussy. Roger and I look at each other and think that we should leave. But, we decided to stick it out. It had taken us two hours or maybe a little less to get there... since we got lost.

We headed out to the orchards. They was a hay ride, but the line was too long so we walked. Tripp still hated his jacket so I eventually took it off. Then, he seemed to be a little happier. We tried to get some good pictures as that was the whole point of going. We stopped at the pumpkin patch of the orchard to get more pictures (no need for us to get a pumpkin since we'll be in NC for Halloween :0) ) On our way out, we bought some apple butter, an apple pie, and paid for the 5 apples that we picked. We decided to go out to dinner with the Rubins once we were back in the city. Thankfully, Tripp redeemed himself. He actually slept through most of dinner and then woke up to have another bottle and we left. No crying this time.

Roger and I were exhausted when we got back and know that we will make better choices and decisions next time. I should have watched the clock closer, we should have taken the stroller (then we could have covered him up with blankets), and we should try to get better directions. If we want more pictures, we can go to any of the millions of pumpkin patches near my mom's when we are home.

1) It happens. Glad Tripp redeemed himself. I know it is stressful when they are not cooperating!

2) Newborns are tricky. We finally got smart and packed enough supplies for a week everytime we went somewhere. Big stroller, huge diaper bag. We weren't taking any chances! Now we're dealing with a different monster: the toddler that may or may not throw a massive tantrum in the middle of the store for no apparent reason.

3) Its amazing how quickly you learn with kids. Unfortunately there is no reasoning with them when they are that age and they're trying to communicate their discomfort in the only way they know how.

4) Not everyday is perfect but at least you will be home soon and maybe get a little break when Grandma takes over.

5) My 6-week-old son tells me in full sentances (with an english accent)
"mommy-my diaper is full" or whatever might be wrong with him...just kidding. He screamed for a full 2.5 hours yesterday. Tried everything and eventually his face turned really red, his eyes got really big and I felt a huge poopy in his diaper. He was fine after that...like the last 2.5 hours didn't happen. Matt and I looked very frazzled and he just looked at us like "what?" I know what you mean about babies. I also pack for a week when going our for eggs and milk.

6) Did the farmer offer you any "Liquid Apples"? When you come to NC, you should be able to get some in the mountain counties, where they grow many apples. Cider is fine, but Brandy is better. Stop in North Wilkesboro because Junior Johnson still practice the art of making AB to perfection.

8) How funny, Robyn, Tripp usually talks to me too. But, he normally says things like, "Daddy needs to change my diaper." I'm sorry that your little one cried for 2 and a half hours. That sounds like no fun. My diaper bag is always full of all kinds of stuff that I don't need, so much that it hurts my shoulder!

We did not get any "Liquid Apples", that sounds good though and maybe we needed some after our trip there! You are right, hindsight is 20/20.

We have had a better day today, so that is good. He is sitting up in his Bumbo seat like a big boy (or kind of) and played with the toy on his swing today. The things that excite me!

9) Merrit, Will and I used to say to each other "Should we take the stroller", or "should we take his bouncy seat with us" Now we just pack it all up. WE have been stuck in the same situation with the click and go traveler. He also hates to sit in his carseat when awake. Hey we are new at this and learning. But I think we are great moms...don't you:0)

10) sorry, just catching up here...been there, done that, and this is the very reason we are done having babies. They are soooo cute and adorable, but it's the junk you have to haul around that's the problem. Seriously, it's all worth it in the end, and it gets easier as you go.
Yes, I think pictures in NC pumpkin patches may work better, we've had upper 70's all week and this week is supposed to be 80's.
