7) Merrit,
where does Tripp sleep at night. Mine sleeps so much better and longer when he is in bed with us. Not sure how i feel about that. It makes me nervous. We have been trying him in a moses basket next to the bed but he hates it ...i think anyway. Wakes up every hour and then another hour to get him back to sleep. Makes for a very long night. But i-bekf he is in bed with us he sleeps like a champ...who knows.

8) Well, he started out in the pack n play bassinet in our room. Then we moved him to his crib when he was about 2-3 weeks old. It is right next to our bedroom and we can hear him cry when he wakes up to eat. It made me nervous to have him sleep in our bed (although I tried to put him there this morning when he wouldn't go back to sleep at 4:00... then I couldn't sleep because of his sleeping noises and I was worried about rolling on him). I have heard to let them sleep where they sleep the best when it is so early on. That's why he is napping in his swing. Do you swaddle him at night? We started using the miracle blanket and while he hated it at first, it really does help him sleep better. I'm also reading a book that says that babies need to go back to sleep after being awake for the maximum of two hours. Napping during the day will help him sleep better at night (according to the book). So far so good. He slept from 9:00 to 3:30 last night. Then we did have the whole 4:00 issue, but when he woke at 6:45 to eat I put him in the swing afterwards and he went right to sleep.
Waking up every hour and then taking another hour to go back to sleep does make for a long night, for everyone. Does he cry while he is trying to go back to sleep or is he just wide awake? Tripp had his days and nights mixed up at first. He would be up all night and then want to sleep all day. From what I can remember, it just worked itself out. I've kind of blocked that out :)
White noise seems to help him lots. When he was crying big time that first week and we didn't know what to do, the hair dryer helped calm him down and put him to sleep. I know that sounds bad, but we did what we had to do to get through it! He would just get so tired that he couldn't sleep. He has a sheep attached to his crib that makes white noise. So, that might help him too along with the swaddle. He also uses a pacifier. We will just keep putting it in his mouth and it does help soothe him.

Good luck and let me know what works for you!

9) WEll things have gotten better. I busted out the pacifier at 3:00 a.m. Monday Morning. Hanging over the pot waiting for water to boil while half asleep, what a sight. We were not using a pacifier because "they" say it will interfer with breast feeding, which I am doing. But he got the pacifier and he went right to sleep. I was rocking him to sleep every night but now, he will go to sleep on his own, sometimes with or without the paci. Instead of swaddling him I have rolled up two blankets and put them on either side and kind-of sandwiched his body so he feels more secure, I think he likes that. I have to listen to him whine for about 5 minutes then he is out. He is sleeping about 3.5 hour stretches now at night. Of course this has only been one night. what book are you reading?

10) Hey Bek,
Well, he didn't have a good night after 5 am this morning, but I think that it was gas. I know all about the pacifier. The hospital where I delivered doesn't offer them because they support breast feeding so much. I'm also nursing, but found that the paci is a god send. We can give it to him when he is fussy and he will suck right away. Nice that he went for 3.5 hour stretches. Tripp goes for a long stretch the first part of the night, but then it ranges from 3-5 hours for the rest of the night. I'm reading several books and applying different parts of each (some are controversial): The Happiest Baby on the Block, Babywise (we are doing the eat, wake, and then sleep so that we can get him to self soothe some at night), and Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child (that is where I got the 1-2 hours of wake time, including feeding time). Sounds like you had a good night though. Good job!

11) My daughter slept in her crib from day one. Looking back now, I'm glad we did that. Lately we've been having other sleep issues with her, pretty much all stemming from having to switch to a new babysitter.
