So I Guess I'm a Humzooer Now...

I blame it all on Will.

As if I didn't have enough to do, what with a Facebook, a MySpace, an account on lulu.com, and a whole other life off of the computer. Then my good friends Will and Rebekah got a Humzoo account, and have posted so many awesome blogs and photos that I can't help but sign up.

So here I am.

My name is Kristen Layne. Mary Kristen Layne, if you want to be specific (thus the initials) but no one calls me Mary. Except my friend Hugh. And Miss Dixie, who runs the register in the cafeteria. But no one else.

As you might have guessed by the lunch line comment, I'm a student. Junior year. Like everyone else, I'm ready to graduate, but like everyone else, I have a lingering fear of the real world. I like being in a sheltered academic environment, and I'm not afraid to admit it.

I have two passions: writing and photography. Depending on the day and season, one is always ahead of the other, but that one tends to switch off. Write now I'm on my writing streak- maybe 20 pages away from finishing my latest novel, Love & Haight, a historical fiction romance that goes from 1967's Summer of Love San Francisco to 1980's Chicago. Although I've always been my own worst critic, I actually think this book could go somewhere, so I'm beginning the slow process of looking into agencies, publishers, and the like.

It's not my first book. I've been published twice before, though I hesitate to use the term "published" because lulu.com is essentially a print house/vanity press that happens to host a low-flow marketplace. Now, don't get me wrong- I love that print house dearly, and it's awesome to be able to get my work in print for only $10.... but it's not really being published. If you want to look on there, the books are Unmasked and Letter to Letter. The first is decent, the second (the first I wrote).... not so much.

Photography is something I've always been interested, and I love to preserve moments as I live them. Every picture has a story. (And I can probably tell it to you.) Once I get this thing up and running, expect a ton of pictures. (But I don't have time to post any right now because House is coming on.)

Oh, and I'm a Mac user. Don't try to convince me otherwise- the debate will rage for days on end. Trust me. I like to debate too.

Hello Humzoo. I think we'll have fun together.

4) Hi Kristen! Welcome to Humzoo! Can't wait to see some photos. I love seeing the work of other photographers. I've been neglecting my camera in a big way lately, but I've been dying to get back out there and shoot some more pics. Happy to have you along on the site.

5) Welcome, Kristen. Can't wait to hear more about your writing and see some of your photos when you have time to post them. I'm a wannabeMacuser but working up to it.

Good luck with the new book--sounds like a winner!!

6) Welcome to Humzoo, Kristen! Your "sheltered academic environment" statement reminded me of my daughter who would agree with you. She now has two masters degrees and is working on her PhD! At the moment she is sequestered writing her first year paper. I think you two girls will have a lot in common!

7) I like photography, also, and so does my husband. We're totally amateurs, though, unlike stheinz, Dave Heinzel and Denny Deaton. Welcome to HumzOo, and I look forward to seeing your shots! Hmmm...I think you maybe our youngest HumzOoer?!

9) Welcome to Humzoo, Kristen. Aren't Macs nice??!! Next best thing since breadsticks!! Now don't take Brian and Angi (thank you both) too seriously about photography I do - I am an amateur. Dave and Denny are very knowledgable when it comes to cameras and their use.

11) Welcome to Humzoo!! What did you think of House last night? Apparently I haven't watched in a while because I had NO IDEA that b*tchy intern girl was dating Dr. Wilson! Creepy!

12) it is decidedly weird to see another 'mkl' in print...but then I am actually an 'mklc' now....however, decidedly weird is an excellent way to take on a new experience...so there it is, new 'humzooer'.
