attack of the chi-wow-wows...
Last week Mr. Shoo and I were walking our dogs. They're very friendly boys and like to say hi to everyone, especially other dogs. So, when we saw a little chi-wow-wow running in the road, I stopped so Clancy could say hi to him. The dog was yipping, but I figured it was out of excitement...boy, was I wrong. The dog bit at Clancy, so Mr. Shoo made some scary man noises at the dog while Clancy and I rushed away.
Early one morning last week I was out running. I saw the same dog in the road. It yipped at me and nipped at my ankles. It actually chased me down the road and around the corner. I was annoyed and slightly concerned, as there are a lot of small children and dogs in our neighborhood. But I ignored it...until this morning.
I was running again this morning. This time there wasn't just one dog, but two. And they were smart. One of the little buggers got in front of me and was running backwards nipping at me. The other was on my side. The little things cornered me and were going after me. I was actually contemplating kicking the darned things. They actually got my shoelace before the across the street neighbor came out and yelled at the dogs. He told me that he and his family have had a lot of problems with the dogs. They dogs are now frightened of them. I thanked him and kept running.
I decided to call animal control on these dogs. They aren't just yippers, but they actually bite. If their owners actually kept tabs on them and kept them on leashes, there wouldn't be a problem. But from what I've seen, they just put the dogs outside and leave them. I asked the man I talked to what would happen as a result of my phone call. He let me know that they'd go over to the house and let the owners know that there was a complaint about the dogs and that they'd need to keep their dogs on leashes. He told me to let them know if there were any other problems.
I'm going running tomorrow morning, and I'm really hoping I don't encounter these dogs. I could go a different way, but I know the distance for this route...and I'm getting good at running it. And I don't want to have to change my route because someone else can't play by the rules and be a good pet owner.

I'm slightly embarrassed that I'm scared of a couple of chi-wow-wows...but I promise, they're really vicious.

1) p.s. This sounds like it was written by a teenager...not an English teacher. I apologize. I'm lazy tonight.

2) Good for you for calling animal control. I hope the owners aren't more vicious than the little yip yaps. I think I'd change my route and have Shoo jog that way tomorrow so that they will think he filed the complaint. Shhhhh...our little secret.

3) I don't know what the owners are like, Leslie. They live around the corner, so we really don't interact with them at all. I'm going to guess by the way their dogs behave and the way the neighbor talked about them that they aren't exceptionally friendly. I actually considered going up to the house and letting them know about the dog problems, but I was afraid the things (owners or dogs, not sure which) would come after me. I'm thinking about changing up my route tomorrow morning just because I'd feel really bad if I got angry and kicked a dog...and I'd feel worse if I got bitten because I was too stubborn to change my running route.

4) Carry a squirt gone with water in it. You don't want to get bitten-there is already one unfortunate soul on humzoo trying to recover from a dog bite.

5) I was going to say the same thing, Dannie. Negative but not really painful for the dogs. I worked with dogs of all sizes for years. I was never as afraid of the big dogs (barring really nasty ones!) as I was of the small ones. They tend to overreact and panic easily and bite before giving much warning. Big dogs are usually slower to bite (again...non-aggressive ones!) and give more warning. I had one very similar who used to nip at my dog's legs when we'd walk down the street. I saw it go home--it was at least 3 yards down when it came after us. That's aggressive. A dog will protect its home and family but when it runs down the street and attacks, that's a fear-biter or an over-aggressive dog. You are right to complain. Small children and other neighbor dogs deserve to be on their street and unmolested by these dogs. Hope you get it worked out soon.

6) Dogs shouldn't be running loose. Its as simple as that. You shouldn't have to change your route because your neighbours are idiots. If one does attack you, absolutely kick it or do whatever is necessary to defend yourself.

7) Advice received from Animal Control officer when Cody & I were attacked in similar incident---- carry air horn cause will hurt their ears/hearing causing them to back down. Mace and other items will just piss the animal off more.
The other dog involved in our situation ended up being put down cause it attacked a neighbor kid (who ended up w/ stitches in leg).

8) additional info--- air horn will bring notice to folks faster than you yelling 'help' if attacked.

9) I agree with George. No one should have to fear a dog in the neighborhood. People live too close together and children should be able to play and folks to walk or run without fear of being bit. Hopefully animal control will give the owner a warning.

10) I didn't go running this morning, so I don't know if the owners did anything about the dogs.
LGrant, these dogs run several yards down and across the street, so they aren't simply protecting their yard. They're the chihuahuas from hell.
I'll be going tomorrow morning, and I won't hesitate to do whatever it takes to get the things off me. (But hopefully I won't have to worry about it again.)

11) I also agree with George. We have a chihuahua in our neighborhood that's the same way. They just let him out, they don't watch him or put him on a leash. More than once I've come home and he's in MY front yard barking at me. It's infuriating to know some people just don't think the rules apply to them.

12) Man, little yippy dogs can be the worst--they're like cats that bark--and regardless of the size, pet owners should be held accountable for their animals. I call the "dog catcher" when I see animals on the loose that have no tags or are unfriendly or won't follow me so can help.

Now, there are a couple of dogs in our neighborhood that I recognize, but they aren't very social and when I've been in the situation to help them get back into their yards or on their tie outs, they've been uncooperative. Unfortunately, I've had to call the "dog catcher" on them, as well, even though we are friends with their owners - I just don't want to get bitten or let them sense my apprehension. However, I only call if I can't get ahold of their owners at work or on cel phones, but if you don't interact with these neighbors, I suppose you wouldn't have that information...

Good luck, and be careful!

13) Clearly they were not dogs, but rather velociraptors.

15) Ames and Angi, most dog owners in our neighborhood are very responsible. If their dogs are out, then they are out with them. It makes me so angry that these people are so irresponsible.
Casey, your description is much more accurate.

16) :-D Your description of the hunting chihuahuas reminded me instantly of that scene from Jurrasic Park (I can't remember if it's the first or second one) where they describe the supposed hunting tactics of the raptor. And I agree with LGrant - sometimes little dogs just freak me out.

17) I've thought about calling the dog catcher, but when I thought about how the conversation would go, it almost seems like a joke...
"Yeah, there's a dog loose in my neighborhood running amuck and terrorizing some small kids... a description of the dog?.... well he's a chihuahua wearing a sweater."

18) You need the opossum catcher.

19) Ames, that's definitely how I felt calling animal control..."Yea, I got cornered by two chihuahuas." Que the hysterical laughter. I went running this morning, and there were no dogs...hopefully the owners have decided to be responsible. Mr. Shoo and I have been looking for the dogs whenever we go by the house...have yet to see them. This has to be a good sign.
