I think they've seen Jurassic Park.

The raptors--I mean, chihuahuas were out again today. I actually looked around the corner to see if they were there. They were chasing a man going up to a house next door. I think he was a stranger, as he seemed very surprised by the dogs. He did that awkward run-walk while looking over his shoulder to make sure they weren't getting him.
I started to take a different route, but I didn't get far. I was mad that I had to change my route I was comfortable with because of those rats. So, I didn't. I went back to the house and got the squirt bottle we use on our dogs, and I took my usual route.
I thought that possibly the monsters had gone back inside...until I was two houses down. (Yes, they go that far...they aren't protecting their own yard. They're being mean, aggressive little buggers.) Both of them were out today, but I was armed with a squirt bottle. I figured I'd be fine. So, I kicked my speed up a notch and started squirting.
Now I'm convinced those things aren't dogs but raptors...or their owners have let them watch Jurassic Park one too many times. One dog would get in front of me, so I'd spray it. While I was distracted, the other would come up behind me, so I'd turn and spray it. The one in front of me would then get closer. So, I just did a really awkward backwards sideways fast run until I was around the corner. (For whatever reason, they only hunt on Urban. They don't go around the corner.)
Anyway, I made it away safely...and called Animal Control again. I know I have good reasons for calling them, but I'm also being hard-headed in not just changing where I run. I just need to keep telling myself that they're in the wrong...not me.

1) Forget water on dogs. Water only works on cats but cats tend not to attack joggers. I say just run at them, scare them, and if necessary, kick them. I hate overly and unnecessarily aggressive dogs and refuse to be scared by them. They're smaller than me and although they have teeth, I can punch and kick the little buggers.

2) Are there no leash laws where you live? I would take your cell phone with you and call Animal Control so they could catch them in the act.

3) George, it's getting to the point where I'm just going to start kicking them. I definitely had to remind myself several times that I'm Godzilla compared to them...and if they bite me, they're in trouble, not me.
Tomorrow morning I might try a different route. This is becoming too much of a hassle.

4) I think that you should write down their address and sign them up for all sorts of junk mail. You could also sign them up for the Mormons to come and visit their house.

5) I don't think animal control have an emergency response unit like the cops do for bank robbers and stuff. There are leash laws, I think, but I'm not sure how well they are enforced or how seriously they're taken.

My wife said that she passed that same house where she was bitten yesterday and she saw one of the people coming home. The garage door was open and she could see that same dog running around in the garage. He could easily have got out and bitten a child. Maybe I'll try and be passing there sometime when they operate the garage door, will the dog out to attack me and just kill the bugger.

8) After I called Animal Control last time, it took them about two hours to come out and check on the dogs. By that time, they were back inside. I talked to the Animal Control guy who came out. He told me that the first time the owners are issued a written warning, and after that, they're given citations. He also told me to make sure to keep calling if there are problems with the dogs, as they don't just drive around checking on things. They only come out if there is a report filed.
I don't necessarily want to get bit by the dogs, but I'd rather it be me than some child riding his bike or walking by. We live in a kid-filled neighborhood, and I'd really hate to see a kid get bit because of irresponsible dog owners.

Also, I just saw the Animal Control truck drive by headed to the house.

9) Yay! I'm guessing that means you're not the only one who's called Animal Control on them. I hope they keep those vicious little raptors inside from now on.

10) Yes, I agree that you shouldn't change your route and keep calling Animal Control. Period. Just think that you may be saving a child from a painful dog bite, and those animal-control folks are paid to deal with neighbors such as yours. Oh and the brochures couldn't hurt...

12) This is something I get steamed about. I love dogs...except when I'm jogging. When you see a dog running at you full-speed, you don't know if it's looking to play or looking to take a chunk out of your leg. I've had both kinds of encounters and now jog with mace. But it's not the dog's fault, it's the irresponsible owners who don't control their pets. I think Animal Control should take them away.

13) How about an airhorn? Got one of those for the football games? Dogs have sensitive ears--maybe a good blast will help discourage the little varmints. My other suggestion is to lasso them with slip leads (like they use at the vet--you can make one with a leash by running through the loop or a piece of light rope. Then walk them to the house or better yet take them to the animal shelter as dogs running loose and in danger. :)

14) Can someone take a camera and go along or can you take photos of the attack to give to the animal control? Video?

15) I think you're completely right in calling animal control and in not changing your route. It would be easy to change your route but its unnecessary and it would also be easy for them to keep their dogs in check. I definitely think you're doing the right thing. You're doing some other dog or little kid a favor by speaking up.

16) I'm thinking the next step is an air horn. I was actually thinking about it last night before I went to bed.
LGrant, I also think the video is a good idea.

18) I think a can of pepper spray is what will work best - my husband has been an Animal Control Officer for 12 years - he carries pepper spray - it will even stop a pit bull - and don't stop calling Animal Control - call them every time the dogs come after you - I realize they are only Chihuahuas but think about what they could do to a young child.

And I would not change my route to jog - the owners need to step up and be responsible.
