Anyone want a dog?
On Saturday Chris woke up early and did a long bike ride. I decided I wanted to go to the gym and run since it was rainy and humid outside. I left the pups in the kitchen with their beds...bad idea. I lifted some weights, did a short run, and was home in an hour...
I opened the door and was almost tripped by a little wiener dog--Buddy. Buddy doesn't usually run outside enthusiastically. In fact, usually I have to push him outside...unless he's done something bad. So, I was on full alert when I walked into the kitchen. I didn't need to be. An idiot could've figured out why he went running...

This is what I saw when I walked through the door.

He has a thing with eating doggy beds...for our wedding present, Betsy and Rob bought Buddy and Clancy really nice doggy beds with fluffy stuff and built in blankets. Buddy performed surgery on them both and ate the stuffing within a few months of getting them. He mauled this new bed also.

When I let him back in, he hid under the table. He gets this guilty look on his face and hides either behind the couch or under the table...

He wouldn't look at me and stayed behind the couch until Chris got home. We now have one bed for both dogs...and Clancy is usually the one who gets kicked off. I don't want to buy another bed, but I feel bad that Clancy sleeps on the floor while Buddy gets the comfy pillow.
Darned dog!! I'll give you a dollar if you take him, but don't tell my husband.

2) LOL...like any of us would believe you would give Buddy away! Have you ever tried sheepskin "type" beds? When I used to work in the pet industry it was the one type of bed dogs didn't seem to chew. Some places do a double heavy-sheepskin-like fabric that you can add padding to or not. Might consider one of those--the thicker the sheepskin stuff, the better. Maybe Buddy wouldn't be in the dog house so much for being one of those destructive weiners. :)

3) Maybe you should import some frogs. They are the preferred snack of Weiner dogs. Really! Nine out of ten Weiners surveyed would rather have a slimy green frog over polyester stuffing.

4) One of our dogs just won't learn so we have never been able to leave a blanket, pillow, etc. down. That also means that the the other dogs cannot have those things as well. Don't worry, they all have survived!

5) Just don't let them have doggie beds. They can lie on the cold hard floor. We've already decided that if Sam destroys his that is the last one he has. We decided that after he'd chewed a little from a corner. I think he read our mind because there has been no more damage since and that has been at least a year i think.

6) Do they have other things to chew? I mean, our dogs have had the same beds since they were a year old, and Libby (our Lab) is an avid chewer; however, we do keep several Nyla bones about, and when we would leave them for long periods of time (1-6 hours), we'd fill a Kong full of their favorite snacks--baby carrots, kibble, peanut butter, cheese, etc.--and they were good to go. Even now that they are six years old, we still have a "flare up" of bad-doggy behaviour a couple times a year e.g., Kai destroyed a couple of pot holders before Christmas '07 and Libby got ahold of one of Galvin's wooden train cars back in January. What can I say? They do get bored, I think.

By the way, there are most days that I would pay folks $50 each to take our girls. HA!

7) Poor little Buddy. He's so cute. He was just paying you back for leaving him behind. It was a Saturday, after all! Our last dog was just like that. He let us go to work Monday-Friday but all the other times we left him, he let us know he didn't appreciate it. It's weird but they just seem to know. Poor Buddy. I hope he gets out of the doghouse soon!

9) We've tried leaving bones and toys with him, but he still wants to chew on what he isn't supposed to chew. I would leave them without beds, but I feel bad for Clancy...although even now, Buddy is asleep on the remaining bed, and Clancy is laying on the cold, hard floor.
I might have to try their Kong...the only thing I worry about is that it'll become a fight to the death over them. The dogs always want what the other has...even if theirs is exactly the same.
Scott, I might do something awful to the dog. I lost it on Bud when he ate one of my favorite shoes.

10) My Jack Russell likes to chew on fluffy stuff. His favorite toy was a three foot long braided fleece rope I found at Petsmart. It's now only about six inches long but he stopped eating all the kids stuffed animals. :)

11) They like to play with them but don't seem to destroy them like other beds. I can't remember the brand name we used to carry but it came in sheets of imitation lambskin and could be sewn together for a bed. A double piece made a nice bed without any stuffing. It's the stuffing that tends to attract the dogs to gnawing on the bed. Might try some cedar ones to see if they will leave those alone--or not. :)

12) I'll have to try lambskin with no stuffing...see if that works. It is the stuffing that he goes for because once the bed is opened, he's done with it...he plays with the stuffing.

13) Cody ate a puppy bed/pillow when he was younger. Never did that again cause he was stuck in his kennel with the mess. Did make the pups their own blanket though and they love it. In fact they think the ones on the bed belong to them. Don't tear them up but mess up to make comfy.

Here's one similar to what I was talking about. Kitch & Grant, you might want to check this out too. One thing one breeder mentioned--wicks accidents away if the puppy has one in the crate. And washable too. Not bad on price here but you can shop around. :)

15) My Vet who is also a close personal friend was upset last week because she had to remove one of those rope toys from the gut of a beautiful golden-she wasn't sure if he was going to make it and the owners were just devasted. Please throw out any rope toys you might have-its not worth seeing your dogs in terrible agony.

16) I don't know how many beds Happy has torn up? Maybe 9? He never tears them up right away, so he keeps us guessing. I think we have tried all of the above mentioned beds. He is 7 now and his current bed has been around over a year. That is pretty amazing. It's an Eddie Bauer Travel dog bed. It's made to go into a stuff stack for traveling. I found it at Target for like $20

17) Scott, our dog chewed a cable on our Rock Band game the day we bought it. It was covered under warantee and they sent us a new one!!

Our dog gutted her bed. Now she has a blanket. It's all nicely folded up in her crate during the day, and when she goes to bed she makes a nest.

18) Spike, we're the same way with Clancy and collars. For whatever reason he always wants to eat off Buddy's collar. I think it's just somewhere he can grab and hold onto Bud, and it accidentally gets destroyed.

Oh, the incredible chewing dogs. How I love them.

20) We were lucky with the chewing things with our dogs. They did chew on a couple of blankets that were in their crate, but it was not a big deal. It is like even when they are bad, you still love them though! :)

21) Clancy isn't a chewer except on Nylabones, but Buddy eats everything. But you're right, niki, I still love him...just want to give him away sometimes.
