Mr. and Mrs. Shoo Go to the Zoo
Because school has started (both of them), Mr. Shoo and I haven't gotten to see a lot of one another in the past couple weeks. For the past couple weeks we've been in a bit of a slump. I come home and cook dinner or grade, and he goes out on a bike ride. (He's been training for the century this up-coming weekend.) By the time he gets home and I'm finished, I'm wiped. I go to bed and read, and he does work. No quality time. I've missed him, and I'm sure he's missed my sparkling face.
So, I told him that Monday was our day. We had the weekend to do any work that needed to be done, but Monday he had to spend with me...no work...nothing. I wanted to get out of Springpatch and do something we don't typically do. So, we drove down to St. Louis and went to the zoo.
Even though it was disgustingly hot and humid and I had a cold, we had a really good time. I was reminded over and over why I married him...we always have fun together, even if sweat is dripping down our backs (and other places).
It seemed that a lot of the animals had just had babies.

We got to see baby zebras, elephant, tigers, gazelles and a baby giraffe (my favorite). I love the giraffes for whatever reason...maybe because I'm so short and they're so tall--jealous.

Here's a really good giraffe picture Mr. Shoo took for me.

I have to share the conversation that goes along with this photo:
Mr. Shoo and I were standing and looking at this guy, and we overhear a little girl talking to her mother.
Little girl: Mommy, that's a girl.
Mom: How do you know?
Little girl: Because she's wearing eyeshadow.

It was such a cute conversation. And a really great day.

Update: Mr. Shoo posted a cutie-patootie picture of the two of us down by the riverfront.

1) What a great way to spend the day. I like the giraffes too. Maybe because I'm short too but there is something very elegant about them--almost regal. Maybe it is that great graceful neck. I get a lump in my throat considering the length food has to go in that neck. :)

Loved the photos.

2) I love going to the zoo. I wish we had one close to us. In the spring I went to the Omaha Zoo. What a gorgeous facility that is. The only apalling part was when a chimp pooped and then started eating it. Ewwwwwwww. I'm glad you and shoo too had a blast at the zoo. :) :)

3) I'm glad the giraffe made the home page. Such a nice photo. We have a zoo here but I haven't been yet. Zoos both attract me and depress me. I love looking at the animals but I'm sad to see them in captivity. I know a lot of them survive for this reason only but it still saddens me. At least zoos have improved over the years and aren't quite as depressing. And a lot of these animals were born in captivity so they haven't known anything else. :)

5) Glad you had fun. I think we all get wrapped up in what we are doing and forget to take time to have fun. I loved the pictures and little girl story. What kind of animal was that anyway?

6) Linda, I had a student write a persuasive essay on zoos. She argued that while animals are kept in captivity and sometimes in small cages, they also have a lot of stimuli. She posed the question of whether a person would rather be kept in a huge, completely empty white room or a smaller room filled with books, television, etc. As you point out, some species are only continued because of zoos.

Yes, Beancounter. The zoo in St. Louis is the St. Louis zoo.

Dannie, I'm really glad Mr. Shoo and I were able to get away. It was really nice to be able to spend time together and forget about the real world. The animal was some sort of warthog. I can't remember his exact name.

8) I tried to be nice in my response. Since Trippy left, I'm really trying to be more aware of how I respond to people because I know I can be nasty. But it's really difficult sometimes. Do you ever feel like it's some sort of Candid Camera social experiment?

11) Tough question--good poser. Obviously we all want C--all of the above. Books AND space. :) At least the zoos try to be responsible and give the animals as much natural habitat as their funds will allow. When I think how far they have come and how much they have impacted some species that would be extinct otherwise, I can forgive the captivity but it still saddens me to see a beautiful big cat at one.

I don't know which would make me happier. I crave space but then again I crave stimuli too. :)

12) I agree, LG. But I figure whatever keeps the species alive.

13) We really enjoy visiting the St. Louis zoo, too. My favorite is the giraffe - such a good picture of one. I'm with you Mrs.Shoo about the social experiment. It's funny when you think about it. How many people read and ponder these blogs but never comment?
