My First Gallery Show

Despite the yucky rainy weather we had a very nice gallery opening this evening. I was very nervous. I have had things in two different galleries and last year actually sold several pieces. The economy has really been tough on non-essentials and I wasn't really expecting much out of this show. My friends overwhelmed us with their support and we really had a fun evening. Pam and I both had two sales, so we were pretty excited. This show was in the new Stokes County Arts council "Apple" gallery. The building originally was a bank and we were lucky to get a grant from the Apple Foundation to make the renovations.
I had two of my Big baskets along with my jewelry, collage, wax encaustics, photography and mixed media pieces. Pam (Pegi's sister and little Sam's great aunt )had a selection of her Kudzu baskets. For fun, Pam had some Kudzu jelly to serve with the refreshments. See the contest photos for more of Pam's baskets.
I would like to share some of my work with the Humzoo family,
This is Caroline at 18 months. I do a lot of my painting from my own photographs. This was done with gouache and acrylics. Her eyes are really this blue.
Mixed media, marbled paper, acrylic and lichen that I decoupaged on to the surface.
My big baskets.Kudzu, honeysuckle and wisteria-sorry I just realized I didn't flip them but you can still see the construction.
Stokes County train. I saw this one day coming down the tracks so I hurried home and got my camera
.
collages done with hand dyed paper, marbling, found objects, old paintings and acrylics
My jewelry made with glass I have fused in a kiln. I buy the chains on sale at Kohl's and alter them to work with my pendants. It helps with the cost.
The Family -Gestural painting with gouache
My dreams - mixed media
My Son Becomes a Father - Matthew actually holding Caroline one month before his son Davis was born.
Jesse's Angel I think I have shown this before. It took me a year and a half to get this the way I wanted it.
There are more but this gives you an idea of my work. Thanks for letting me share it with you.

7) Nice job with the beautiful photos. I second !'s comments. You are very talented indeed. You should have an ongoing gallery on Humzoo with prices. I'll bet you could make some sales.

8) If you artists can sell Kudzu Baskets, there is one thing certain you can obtain your raw materials for nothing in NC. I like Stokes County Train, also because I have liked trains since I was a boy. Keep using the NC products because we need the Kudzu cleaned off of the side of the highways.

9) Thanks everybody-whew it was scary posting this but I really am interested in your thoughts. Maybe one day I will have my own web site. I'll be glad to send prices or answer questions if you email me. Bean we do have an abundance of Kudzu but not as bad as Georgia. I really don't understand why its not harvested because a lot of animals like it and the jelly is very good- a slight grape koolaid taste. The fritters are good if you eat them right from the frying pan-they get soggy quick. The boiled kudzu is like boiled okra (slimy) and it stinks when you cook it-don't recommend it.We have to harvest it away from the road side because it is sprayed with poison and we don't want to absorb it into our bloodstream. It makes for some interesting adventures, we have a favorite place that we go and guard its location. The two I sold I didn't photograph because of the glare. One was marbling on tar paper and the other was a very small marbld piece called Heart wobbles.Pam sold two of her "worry baskets."

11) Agreed, Nancy. Dannie, D&D encourage the Humzoo community to use their sites for business purposes. Give an address or post prices if you are comfortable with that. I know folks would love to have those options for gift-giving. Big holiday season coming up!

12) Hey Dannie,

Thank you for including my in with your opening, I had lots of fun. I love all of your work!!!! I have told Matt and Sarah I am so envious of the talent that pours from you. Patty bought one of my whimsy baskets, which I am never sure if they will actually come together.
I always have fun cutting kudzu with Dannie, we never know how much we will actually find or what we will do to each other. Of course Dannie has gotten smacked more and had poison ivy more than I have. I think I need to bring her a hard hat in case I swing the vine too much. Congratulation DANNIE!

The collages are definitely my favorites - especially the green/orange/yellow one with twigs. Really nice.

19) Beautiful work dannie. I'm amazed you can work with so many materials, or maybe I should say media? Anyway, congrats!

20) Thanks Sally. My trouble is I like to do too many things. I don't paint in oils because I am allergic to it and pastels are pretty rough too. I love trying different things and then combining them.Ii really enjoy working with kids and if I was younger I would get my teaching degree in art but I guess its better just doing workshops-don't have all the other teacher hassles.I maybe doing some volunteer work with disabled adults this winter and that should be a lot of fun.
