My Favorite Moose

Reading LGrant's blog about her friend's close encounters with a four legged giant, I decided to see if I could find some of my pictures from our last trip to Alaska. My good friend Doctor Debbie (vet) and her husband Bruce went with us. The first day there we kept seeing Moose and Debbie had me chasing them through the brush to get pictures. After the first day they were as common as house cats and it wasn't necessary to stalk them. We actually ran into these critters the last day outside an Alaskan Indian museum

2) WEre you not nervous. The moose out in Idaho would charge and stomp the crap out of ya if the could. I love Moose they are my favorite animal...I think. Maybe because we both have big noses:) Driggs has alot of moose themed cloths. Anyway they are beautiful shots. How close did you actually get to the moose

4) All but the first picture were taken at a Indian museum right outside of Anchorage. I had made a wrong turn and it was a dead end. There were about 6 of them just grazing. I was pretty close-maybe 10 feet at the most. I think it depends on the time of the year. It was August and they had been eating all summer so probably weren't as aggressive. Dumb me-I didn't think about being scared I was more interested in getting pictures. Richard was picking up the poop for me and we actually made earrings out of the droppings. Since they are vegetarian its really doesn't smell and it dries to look like sawdust. We coated them with acrylic varnish. We have been twice. The first time we went with a church group and the first week we vacationed in Homer, which is so beautiful. We also spent some time in Seward. The second week we helped build a house on Cook's Inlet. That trip the Salmon were running and that was so exciting. You could literally walk across the river on the backs of the Salmon. I was afraid to get in the river because I knew if I fell I would be a goner it was moving so fast. We loved Alaska so much we went last year and stayed at a B&B in Homer. We went Halibut fishing one day. We also spent a couple of days in Seward and went out on the bay and saw all kinds of animals, my favorite being the whales and the seals. One of Richard's favorite places was a lodge on the Cooper River that served "Pig Vomit omelets". We flew in to Anchorage and then rented a car and did the trip on our own. We hope to go next year and take the train through Denali and see some different places but I am hooked on Homer. Actually Men in Trees is modeled after it. Will and Bek you would love it-its like a small Asheville and is artsy and has all kinds of characters.
My son Matthew's nickname used to be Mamoose because he couldn't pronounce his name. We were big into Moose at one time.

7) I will dig out a picture of it. Its bacon, ham, I think a pork chop all wrapped in egg and covered with cheese and gravy. Richard had one the first year and so we were very happy to come across the same place last year. (It really isn't too hard, there are not very many roads in Alaska.)

8) I have never seen a moose up close and personal but I would sure love to. Great shots! I used to love watching Rocky and Bullwinkle, that's pretty sad.

9) Great photos of the moose. We are with you - we absolutely love Alaska. What B&B did you stay in at Homer? We stayed at Two Sisters -- great place -- the rooms were right over the bakery. Wonderful smells to wake up to in the morning.

13) I'm sure there are others who think that is great, Dannie. Even in my deepest meat-eating days that would have been over the top for me. Too much of too much stuff. LOL
