The Best Grand-diddie!

So, I thought I would show off what Sam's soon to be Grand-diddie (a.k.a. Bob) has been working on since we found out we were pregnant. He has been working fast and very hard on a couple of projects for us!
The first project was to take out our hall closet that was pretty useless and to make a set of built in cabinets. We have a 2 bedroom house with limited storage space, so we had a couple of things that needed to be addressed for this space -
#1. The cat was NOT going to be using his litter box in our room or in Sam's room, so we needed to find a new place for him to poop.
#2. We had a huge flat file that took up half of the room that is going to be Sam's and we needed a new place to keep all of our artwork that is not framed.
#3. The kitchen was just not cutting it as the bill paying and storing area, so we needed some space to keep and pay bills.
#4. On top of everything else, we needed to store linens, the vacuum cleaner, and tools.
Sounds impossible right?
Not when Sir Bob is on the job!!

Nice, huh?!
Here is a detail of the desk area -

And the new flat file -

And - the best!! The cat pooping station. Very classy, huh?!

Now, it would not be complete unless that pooping station was smell free -so what did Bob come up with? A fan that vents outside of the house! it doesn't stink at all.

Now, I said a couple of projects - so it didn't just stop there. He also took on making a dresser/changing table and crib. We were very excited, but really had no idea how AWESOME this was going to be. All I have to say is - Sam is a very lucky boy!
So far, the dresser/changing table is done. Diddie/Bob is working on the crib, which is just fine because we need some space for my parents to stay when Sam gets here. For now, Sam will be sleeping in a cradle in our room. So, here are some pics of the GORGEOUS dresser!
This is when they brought it down and he started to put it all together. Notice the backing - very nice, huh!? All of the wood is from the Appalachians and the backing is Kirei (made from recycled sourgum - please refer to Bob for all technical questions!)

The drawers aren't just normal either - the backing is made of Kirei and the bottom is painted red.
Oh - all materials and sealers, etc are non-toxic. Basically he made this so Sam could eat it and it still would not hurt him!

The finished product!

And a detail of the sides. I mean, could this be cooler?!

Thanks Dad/Grand-diddie/Bob! We love you!

3) Amazing work, Bob. That's some true craftsmanship. I love the kitty litter solution - I think we're going to steal the outside ventilation idea.

Sarah, good luck on the homestretch. We're all thinking about you here and can't wait to see pictures of Sam.

What wonderful photos of a wonderful job!! You are so very, very talented, Bob! I think you got it all when it comes to wood craftsmanship in our family!! (no offense to Nancy or Roger, of course!!) Beautiful wood and I love the unique way you put it together!! Gorgeous!
Can't wait to hear that Sam has arrived! It will be a VERY special and exciting day for all of us. Becoming grandparents has been one of the most exciting things we have experienced in our lives. I know you and Pegi will feel the same way!

10) That's awesome, Dad. I haven't seen any drawings so I didn't know what to expect. You stepped it up. Very nice. You may have a new career ahead of you. I've heard from my sources that it doesn't matter how long it takes or if you even make any money, so you should just do it. You also get to fish 3 days a week in the custom furniture making world, so that's a benefit.
See you guys soon.

13) Those pieces are incredible and even more awesome that they are custom-made with love and that the materials and craftsmanship is amazing and beautiful. Love the cat box idea--very clever and effective!

Wonderful work--I know your grandson, Sam, will enjoy learning these kinds of skills from his Granddad when he is old enough.

14) Awesome, just awesome, Bob. When I heard what you were making I knew it would be great. You are very talented and do fantastic work. Beside a lot of time and effort on your part, I know a lot of love went into this piece of furniture.

16) Matt, I never got around to any drawings for the dresser. I just bought some spalted maple and worked from there. I'm doing the same thing for the crib, starting with the mattress and building around it. I prefer working this way, especially after doing lots of tedious drawings for the closet cabinets/cat house.

Thanks to everyone for your kind comments. It's amazing what one can do when the entire purpose of a project is built on love, not commerce.

21) Well, Aunt Nancy, I think I am in "pre-labor". Not worth blogging about yet - just been uncomfortable since Friday night and I am having a lot of not so painful contractions. Should be any day now!
