Do You Have the Cojones for Father's Day?

I was sitting in the waiting area at the Jeep dealership while my Grand Cherokee was getting some 60,000 mile service work done when I picked up a free copy of the central Illinois publication “Illinois Times.” This issue included their “summer guide” which had articles and calendars about areas and places and times within Illinois that are worth the price of gas to go visit. I read an article about an event that takes place in a town about 65 miles west of Springfield called Mount Sterling; this event takes place every year the day before Father’s Day. The name of the event is the Sportsman’s Club Testicle Festival. The main attraction is Rocky Mountain Oysters, or prairie oysters, or swinging sirloin, or Montana tendergroin, or whatever you want to call them!! If you are one of those that are saying “My God, you actually eat those things!!!!” - then read no further.

If, on the other hand, you share the same enthusiasm for this edible offal, as the enthusiasm expressed by a popular Food Network host when he says, “Oh yeah, babes, it doesn’t get any better that this!” - then you might want to continue reading.

The Mount Sterling festival began in 1995 when livestock farmers in the area started having parties in the local bars in which testicles were the main drawing card. The festival grew until it was an all-day block party that included live bands “and more testicles than you could shake a stick at.”

I turns out that Mount Sterling isn’t the only place that goes nuts over the “totally titillating testicular turkey treat”. In the city of Byron, near Rockford, the Turkey Testicle Festival has been held in October for 30 years. Near Chicago, in Byron, a testicle festival takes place around Thanksgiving at the Parkside Pub.

For me, I can’t think of a nicer Father’s Day gift than to be in Mount Sterling and scarf up some of the best testicles in central Illinois. See you there, dudes!!!

1) I would have to say you did seem to be the most adventurous eater at lunch today. You were the only Heinzel in the gyro shop eating Greek food.

6) If Yanni cooks it, then I'll give it a try. If you get in there to try the Mousaka, I highly recommend it.

9) They have a Turkey Testicle Festival in Charleston. We used to go every year when I was at Eastern. It was such a great time, but I was never brave enough to sample the cuisine.

11) dannie, thank you - I have a lot of pictures of butterflies, moths, and insects that are just sitting around on my computer taking up memory, so I thought once a month I would change the header to something in the natural world that I have photographed.

12) I will probably be there. I have a hunting cabin a few miles north of Mt. Sterling off of 99 and need to do some chores out there. We frequent Sportsmans and Time Out's....good town but not sure I will eat this dish.
