Nancy was getting ready to cut some dried purple coneflower seeds for her brother in N.C. when I spotted a cicada sitting on a coneflower. I pointed it out to her so she wouldn't be frightened if she spooked it and it flew away making a racket. These creatures are sometimes referred to as locusts or dogday harvestflies.

1) cicadas are my favorite insect. Actually they may tie for first with the preying mantis. I like to listen to them.

2) Books always talk about the cicadas out in the dusk or early morning and I used to wonder if they sounded like crickets or what until I finally heard them and someone told me what they were. They have quite the romantic sound in books--not sure if they are as romantic sounding in person but definitely noteworthy. :)
